Edward VIII is one of the shortest-reigning monarchs in British history with a reign of only 11 months. He abdicated the throne because the British government did not approve him of marrying a divorced woman. Edward VIII married her and remained married until his death.
J.R.R. Tolkien initially fell in love with his future wife at 16 years old. His guardian, a Catholic priest, ordered him to not have any contact until he was 21. He obeyed and finally met her under a railroad viaduct, and she broke up her engagement, converted to Catholicism, and married Tolkien.
