KYM has a point, you absolutely could swap the phrases to almost the same effect. But for some reason, and this might just be me and Adi Joseph in the tweets above, my gut feeling is that the two memes are slightly different. “Name a more iconic duo” seems slightly more positive to me. Perhaps it’s the use of the word “iconic,” which implies that the duo is instantly recognizable as one half of a whole.
Take, for example, the Barry B. Benson/Vanessa pairing from above. I have a hard time thinking of a Bee Movie meme that doesn’t include the two of them in one way or another, like the courtroom “are you her little bedbug” photoset that’s viral here on Tumblr. (Posting the entire Bee Movie script being the one exception.) Barry B. Benson and Vanessa are an iconic duo. They are intrinsically inseparable. So swapping out the two captions would make sense.
Contrast that with the Tyra/Tiffany pairing — there are tons of memes of Tyra Banks on the internet, and while the “We were rooting for you!” meme is massively popular, it’s not the ONLY thing we associate with Tyra or ANTM, for that matter. So, you can separate Tyra from Tiffany, but not necessarily Tiffany from Tyra. IMO, then, this example works with the “couples costume idea” meme, but not necessarily with the “name a more iconic duo” meme.
(Side note: You can read a really fascinating profile of Tiffany Richardson here.)
I’d be curious to hear what everyone here on Tumblr thinks about these two memes, and whether or not they are actually interchangeable.
